Golden Jubilee Celebration for Sister Bernadette Murdoch MSHR

Jubilee Barn
Beautiful Center PieceIf Jesus can be born in a stable, then why not celebrate in a barn? That is exactly what the Murdoch clan did to honor their sister, in-law, aunt, cousin, neighbor and friend as they feasted and feted Sr. Bernadette Murdoch MSHR on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee. The family barn on Murdoch Road, not far from the Miramichi river in Napan New Brunswick, Canada, is not just an ordinary barn but one lovingly restored for a recent family wedding reception by Bernie’s brother John. It more than adequately accommodated the 80 plus who attended to show their admiration and love for one who long ago left the embrace of their caring family and community but never their hearts.

The tables were festooned with fine cloth and each with a lantern centerpiece and a bottle of wine labeled with a special celebratory label with Bernie’s name and date of profession. The food was home-style, in the Miramichi tradition, as was the music performed by Bernie’s internationally knows musician cousin, Matilda Murdoch. Matilda, at age 85, still plays a fiddle that would set any toe tapping. Her sons, musicians in their own right, joined Matilda and were followed by younger family members who gladly displayed their own nascent talent. The element of surprise was in play throughout. An added element was the beautiful hand made quilt hidden behind a white cloth on the wall and appropriately unfurled to show its beauty and workmanship. The quilt, a gift of her nieces and nephews, displays a map of Africa and crosses stitched in the areas that MSHR are missioned.

It seemed only right that the barn be the setting for this joyful event, a simple setting for people close to their land and beloved river. A people of faith, who long years ago gave up a daughter of Murdoch Road to follow a vision and seek out her own roads in the missionary journey. All that is good came into this world from a setting such as a barn. All that flows out of that good was manifested in the barn on Murdoch Road i.e. love, caring, family and friendship. Ad multos annos Bernie.
